10 AMAZING INGREDIENTS TO LOOK OUT FOR WHEN BUYING SKINCARE PRODUCTS
We have talked about the skin, how to care for your skin and many more. Today we are going to be talking about some ingredients that are great for your skin and should be watched out for when purchasing your next set of skin care products. But before we begin let us know what is an ingredient.
Ingredient are substances used in a mixture in other words Ingredients are substances used to get a desired solution.
Some of the ingredients to be listed are some of my favourite. We will look at why I like them and why I think you would to. Such as
• Benzoyl peroxide
• Ceramides
• Glycolic acid
• Lactic acid
• Salicylic acid
• Vitamin C
• Vitamin E
• Retinol
• Niacinamide
• Hyaluronic acid
Everyone ought to know a thing or two about skin ingredients as there are a lots of brands out there just looking to sell and not really interested in making you glow and healthy, also knowing your ingredients will help your narrow down your shopping list.
BENZOYL PEROXIDE: Benzoyl peroxide has antibacterial properties and can penetrate into the hair follicles to kill the bacteria that cause acne. It reduces the level of fatty acid and skin infections. Benzoyl peroxide solution ranges strength from 2.5% to 10%, it may cause skin irritation in people with sensitive skin . So it best to start with a less potent concentration, if you have strong acne problem you can go for a stronger concentration. For all and any product it is best to start little before going on higher concentrations.
CERAMIDES: This is a natural occurring Lipids (oil) that act primarily in the skin uppermost layer. It forms a protective barrier and reduce water loss ( it helps the skin stay hydrated), this will help the skin.
• Remain smooth and soft.
• It reduce and decrease the tendency of dry skin.
• It is beneficial for sensitive, dry, scaly, aged or mature skin.
• Ceramide helps to increase the skin natural lipids content.
• It reinforces the skin’s protective barrier.
As we have discussed before mature skin becomes dry and the skin losses it’s Lipids and become dehydrated.
GLYCOLIC ACID: This is also known as Hydroxy acetic acid is one of the simplest form AHA( alpha hydroxy acids). Glycolic acid has a lot of benefits
• It is a good exfoliant for the skin as it penetrates into the skin and get rid of dead cells.
• It helps reduce wrinkles, fine lines.
• It improves skin hydration by enhancing moisture.
• It increases the skin ability to bind water.
• It is great for age spot and aging skin.
Glycolic acid proves to be beneficial to combination to normal skin as it helps keep the pores clean.
LACTIC ACID: It is also known as sodium lactate. it is an AHA( alpha hydroxy acid). It is used as an exfoliant, preservative, moisturizer and it also provides acidity to the body. In the body lactic acid is found in the blood and muscles. In skincare it provides,
• Improved fine lines and wrinkles.
• It help to get softer and smoother skin.
• It exfoliating properties, helps to get rid of excess pigment from the skin surface.
• It improves the skin texture.
• It has the ability to retain water in the stratum corneum.
• lactic acid can be found in sour milk.
SALICYLIC ACID: It is a BHA( beta hydroxy acid) it is an effective ingredient in acne products. Such as soap, lotion and so on. It is effective in
• It penetrates the pores and exfoliate the build ups and reduces the sebaceous glands blockage
• It is an excellent treatment for blackheads
• It is used to to improve wrinkles, skin tone and roughness
• It can improve the skin thickness, barrier function and medication
• It exfoliate the pores and the skin surface.
VITAMIN C:. It is a powerful antioxidant for the skin,
• It protect against photo damage that is created by sunlight and UV light.
• Vitamin C helps fortify against infectious diseases by strengthening the immune system.
• Vitamin C can pass through the layer of the skin and promote healing in the tissues.
• Vitamin C promotes smother and healthy skin.
• Vitamin C can be gotten from bell peppers, kiwi fruit, citrus fruit, guava and so on
VITAMIN E: It is also an antioxidant, Vitamin E is a lipid soluble which likes fats better than water.
• Vitamin E serves as a preservative function given the ability to protect against oxidation.
• Vitamin E has been proven to improve the appearance of dry, rough skin. It’s helps in reducing excessive pigmentation.
• It is useful in anti-aging creams and lotions and in UV protection products, Vitamin E helps neutralise the body’s free radical damage that are responsible for damaging the skin collagen and drying out the skin.
RETINOL: is also known as vitamin A, it is well known in the skincare industry and has been a recommended for mature or again skin here are some benefits of retinol.
• Retinol has been said to be a good prescription for people suffering with rough skin
• It enhance skin radiance, reduces wrinkles, fine lines, and other signs of premature ageing.
• Retinol has antioxidant properties.
• Vitamin A can be found in natural ingredients such as kidney, egg yoke , cod liver oil. But it can also be synthetic.
• it helps to unclog pores and lighten the lighten dark spots.
NOTE : Retinol can be drying to the skin when used for a long time or when used in high concentration. Rough or dry skin can be a symptom of lack of Vitamin A.
NIACINAMIDE: These comes from Vitamin B3 and derived from Niacin have talked about a little in my previous post and mentioned some benefit to your skin
• It helps achieve smoother skin
• It is a skin stimulant.
• it improves dry, flaky and rough skin.
• Niacinamide helps to even out spots that could have been caused by acne, old age and so on
HYALURONIC ACID: I would love to give these a name but I will settle for the hydration king. I hear some whys but I will give my reason
• Hyaluronic acid draws water from the air and dermis (like how cool can it be )which mean hydrated skin.
• skincare products with hyaluronic acid are very good moisturizers
• it improves the collagen production which help to firm up the skin
• It has a very high water binding capacity.
With all these I have mentioned some great ingredients that everyone including myself find very important for the skin.

NOTE : An hydrated skin is a happy skin and know that some of these products can't be mixed at the same time so make a visit to your dermatologist. It always better to start any ingredients in low concentrations. I love the ordinary product as they give you percentage of their product concentration so you can make your choice.
